A woman police officer killed her partner and their five-month-old baby before killing herself after she found him with another woman, according to reports.
The incident took place in the township of Embalenhle in the South African province of Mpumalanga on 13th February.
Phindile Mabhena, 28, reportedly used her service gun while off duty to shoot her 33-year old estranged lover Sfiso Sindane and their five-month old baby Amahle.
The initial investigation suggested that the incident occurred after a rocky period in the couple’s relationship which resulted in Mabhena moving out of Sindane’s house.
On the day of the incident, Sindane allegedly brought a woman home and the two later went out together.
When they returned to pick something up, Sindane remained in his car while his female associate went inside the house where she was met by Mabhena who was armed with a gun, according to local media portal Tori.
After a while, as Sindane became suspicious of the woman taking too long to come out, he went into the house and was reportedly held at gunpoint.
According to Tori, a scuffle allegedly broke out between the two that resulted in the fatal shooting.
Sindane’s female associate apparently managed to escape without injury and immediately reported the incident to the police.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Mabhena and Sindane and their baby with multiple gunshot wounds.
Mabhena was pronounced dead on the scene while Sindane and the baby were taken to the hospital where they succumbed to their injuries shortly after.
Local news site Opera also published a photo of a suicide note that was allegedly written by Mabhena in January.
In the letter, Mabhena tells her family and friends to not be sorry for her as she is now in a better place, and ends the letter by saying those who commit suicide are not cowards.
The investigation continues.
