This is the moment an armed cop arrests a suspected thief in a supermarket before his accomplices suddenly jump the official from behind and reportedly shoot him dead.

The incident was filmed by a supermarket CCTV camera in the city of Cuernavaca in the central Mexican state of Morelos and the footage was later shared on social media where it has been viewed over 340,000 times.

The victim, identified as 42-year-old Eduardo Soar Nova Lopez, had been with the police force for 13 years, according to reports.

In the footage, the heavyset cop is seen leading a young man into the supermarket before pointing his gun at the suspect’s head and forcing him to kneel on the floor.

The young suspect gets to his feet, swaying on the spot, as the officer points his gun at him.

However, a stocky man in a brightly-coloured vest is seen running across the road towards the supermarket before grabbing the cop from behind.

A third suspect in a blue top joins the fray and the heavyset officer does his best to fight off the trio, but is disarmed in the process.

The first suspect apparently tries to shoot the cop in the head with his own gun, but seems to miss.

The rest of the action takes place off-screen, but the three suspects are seen running out of the supermarket while the officer is unable to give chase.

According to local media, the cop was attended by paramedics at the scene but died of a gunshot wound.

Two of the three suspects, identified as Luis Fernando and Juan Carlos, were arrested just a few metres from the supermarket, according to reports.

However, the third man remains at large.

The detained suspects are reportedly being held in a preventive prison as the investigation continues.
