The middle-aged woman had been talking to the country’s public broadcaster NDR in a street interview about the atrocities carried out by Hamas, a terrorist organisation.

When she was asked what she thought of the attack she cackled and said: “It is good. That’s very good actually.

“It makes me happy that they managed to do something like that.”

The shocked reporter then asked her in the interview recorded in Hamburg on 10th October: “It makes you happy?”

She replied: “Yes, I’m happy, very good. I also celebrated, we celebrated at home.”

Now the woman, who was not named in the report, is being investigated for race hate crimes which could see her jailed for up to five years if convicted.

She could also face three more years behind bars for condoning a crime, according to local media.

Germany’s State Security Department confirmed that they are investigating the video but would not say if they have identified the woman.

Hamburg’s Interior Senator Andy Grote, 56, said: “Anyone who supports or is happy about the inhumane and border-crossing barbarism of Hamas can have no tolerance in our society.

“Cheering and celebrating the massacres of Jews by Hamas is intolerable and has no place on our streets.

“We will therefore proceed with appropriate actions in a low-threshold and consistent manner.

“When registering meetings, the assembly authority must fully exploit the legal scope.”

Hamburg Police said they are expecting protests supporting the Palestinians in Gaza after Friday prayers as mosques on,13th October.

They said: “If crimes occur, we will take consistent action.”

Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) Chairman Dennis Thering, 39, said: “Shows of sympathy for the Palestinian terrorist organisation Hamas are simply disgusting.

“It’s good that the state security agency is investigating.

“Because one thing is clear, anyone who celebrates the murder of innocent babies, children, women, and men has no place in our country.

“These glorifiers of terror must be deported without any ifs and buts!”

Free Democratic Party (FDP) leader Sonja Jacobsen, 51, said: “The Senate should now act quickly and exhaust all means to ban the planned pro-Palestinian demonstration.

“There is no evidence that the organisers have distanced themselves from Hamas’ terror.

“I don’t think a demonstration by terrorist supporters in the heart of the Free and Hanseatic City is tolerable.”

Social Democratic Party of Germany Chairman Dirk Kienscherf, 57, added: “Inciting, racist statements are not tolerated in Hamburg.

“It is right that the Hamburg police immediately examine the criminal relevance of such statements.”

The Green’s co-leader Jennifer Jasberg, 40, concluded: “The statements made in the interview shocked us deeply.

“We have to prevent the escalation of violence coming from Hamas from poisoning our lives together.”
