Bali bar owner I Gede Wijaya had been drinking with Australian tourist Johnston McCallum Scott when he felt him urinate against his leg, the court heard.

The pair had been boozing on powerful local liquor arak before the brawl on 23rd February.

Denpasar District Court heard on 24th August how Scott had begun throwing glasses at Wijaya when he was told to stop.

Then the holidaymaker picked up a barstool, which he aimed at Wijaya, who wrestled it away from him and hit Scott over the head with it.

But instead of calling for medical help, he simply left Scott at the bar, where he was later found dead.

Judges accepted Wijaya’s claim of self-defence.

Judge Gede Putra Astawa said during the trial: “Leaving the victim alone is inexcusable. The defendant could have called for an ambulance to assist the victim.

“His self-defence led to someone being injured and losing their life.”

Wijaya was found guilty of maltreatment resulting in death and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

The time he has already spent in custody will be deducted from his sentence, judges stated.

Prosecutor Si Ayu Alit Sutari Dewi, who had recommended a three-year term, has not ruled out an appeal.
