This is the moment the back end of a bus hangs over a 9-foot hole in the road after the ground collapsed beneath it during rush hour.

Footage of the orange Route B605 bus shows its back wheels hanging over the sinkhole, which measured 6 feet wide, in Nanshan District in Shenzhen, which is in China’s southern Guangdong Province.

Mr Zhou, the driver, said the bus was stuck in rush-hour traffic when the back of the vehicle sank into the sinkhole at 7:56am local time on 17th July.

He said he heard a “loud clonk” as the wheels dropped into the hole in the ground and the bus chassis hit the asphalt on the city’s Gongye 8th Road.

Images taken in the aftermath show the bus having been completely evacuated as it is left suspended over the sinkhole measuring 9 feet deep.

The bus was hoisted out by a crane and towed away about two hours later, reports said.

According to Mr Zhou, his bus was not crowded at the time of the accident and no one was injured.

The authorities have sealed off both sides of the road for scheduled inspections and repairs.

Li Kelong, an engineer with the Shenzhen Water Affair Engineering Construction Management Center, said sewage pipes running underneath the road were being inspected for leaks, which could have caused the soil to be washed away, creating the cavity.

If no leaks are found, the road will be filled and opened to traffic by 22nd July.
