This is the moment a four-storey block of flats plunges into a huge crater after teetering on the edge as onlookers scream.

The incident took place in the district of Kagithane in the north-western Turkish city of Istanbul after part of the street and the building’s bearing wall collapsed during construction work.

In the video footage, two cars and road debris are seen halfway down the sinkhole as two buildings teeter on the edge at street level.

The terracotta and green building slowly starts to slip forwards and onlookers are heard screaming in shock as the inevitable happens.

The entire four-storey building falls and crashes to the ground below, sending smoke and debris high into the air.

According to reports, when the street and bearing wall collapsed, the local authorities were alerted to the situation and immediately evacuated 10 surrounding buildings.

Local media also responded to the news and arrived on the scene in time to film the building’s dramatic collapse.

Fortunately, the authorities had evacuated the surrounding homes in time and no one was reported as injured, according to local media.

It is currently unclear whether the building collapse is being investigated.
