These images show the big-hearted hiker who carried a 50-kilogramme mountain goat in his backpack for several miles when he found it seriously injured.

Local media report two members of the rescue team “Salvamont Risnov”, Vlad Adamuta and Ioan Boriceanu, found the chamois with a seriously injured leg near Risnov, a town in Brasov County in Romania and had to carry it several kilometres to a waiting car.

Veterinarian Ioan Boriceanu told local media: “ We got there, we took the animal and we realised that we have no agreement to intervene with any competent authority. I stayed for about half an hour, I rang around and finally a gentleman from the forest rangers called someone and in turn, he resolved to give us verbal acceptance so that we could intervene.”

Local media report the vet’s colleague Vlad Adamuta carried the chamois to a waiting car and the animal stayed calm the whole way, including in the car where it was taken to a veterinary centre.

Phots show the animal in the rescuer’s backpack, with its head poking out.

The chamois had to have its injured leg amputated but it survived the operation. As the animal will struggle to survive in the wild with its leg recently amputated it is currently being looked after by forest rangers.

Local media report there are no special centres to look after the animals in Romania.

The chamois is a species of goat-antelope native to mountains in Europe.
