A bullied would-be beauty queen has lost nearly eight stone to take part in a state pageant.

Alejandra Anguiano will take part in the Miss Earth Veracruz beauty pageant being held between 14th and 17th November in the port city of Veracruz in the central-eastern Mexican state of the same name.

The young model, who is also a teacher and law student, has recently lost 50 kilogrammes (7.9 stone) after experiencing bullying due to her obesity.

Anguiano was recently crowned Miss Earth Banderilla in the municipality of Banderilla and will now take part in the state version of the beauty pageant.

In four years, the model shed nearly eight stone through healthy eating and regular exercise.

She told local media: “I used to weigh 108 kilogrammes (17 stone) and I was regularly harassed and bullied, but I always said ‘do not throw stones at those who can one day use them to build beautiful castles’.”

Anguiano reportedly used a nutritionist to advise her on the best natural foods to eat while also undergoing an exercise regime to help her shed the weight.

The model hopes that she not only wins the Miss Earth Veracruz pageant, but is also able to pass on her positive message to others.

She explained: “More than just physical beauty, as a society we should seek to improve our intelligence, values, education, love for nature and care of the environment as they are things we really need in life.”

Anguiano added: “I have not used any chemical products to lose weight that would put me at risk. I am very concerned about my health. All my food is 100 percent natural and based on fruits, vegetables and herbal teas.”

According to local media, obesity and being overweight is something that affects 73 percent of adults and 35 percent of children and adolescents in Mexico.
