Late bars and clubs will remain closed in the Spanish Balearic islands this year unless an effective treatment against the coronavirus is found.

According to the Tourism councillor of the Balearic Islands, Iago Negueruela, late bars and nightclubs where customers can go dancing are not likely to reopen this year if there is not an effective treatment against the COVID-19 virus.

Negueruela told local media some late bars and clubs where customers can sit might be allowed to open but following strict restrictions such as reducing their capacity and opening hours.

The NightLife and Entertainment Businesses Association (ABONE) president Jesus Sanchez told local reporters that he was surprised that Negueruela is not allowing nightlife establishments to reopen after the islands begin their so-called new normality on 21st June.

According to Sanchez, councillor Negueruela told him that the prohibition might extend to the summer of 2021 depending on the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several associations representing the nightlife sector reportedly met this Monday to design a plan that they will present to local authorities in the following days to request permission to reopen late bars and clubs.

Some of the measures include reducing the capacity down to 33 percent, forbidding dancing in clubs, setting up chairs and tables for customers that maintain social distancing and identifying customers to stay in contact with them in case of a possible infection.

They have also proposed that companies specialised in the prevention of risks in the workplace asses every establishment to guarantee that they meet the security standards.

Local media report that many businessmen of the nightlife and entertainment sector fear that local authorities’ prohibition of them reopening their establishments is an undercover strategy to do away with tourism-related alcohol consumption and partying in the Balearic islands.
