Sgt. Jon-Erik Negron was one of four officers from Suffolk County, in the US state of New York, who turned up after reports of an unexpected birth when the youngster, Owen Anthony Maldonado, arrived early in the family living room.

The mother, Rebecca Reyes, from Shirley, called for help when he started experiencing contractions in the early morning.

The police officers had not expected that the baby would be born so quickly and thought it was most likely a false alarm but they went to the scene as it was an emergency, with the officers arriving before the paramedics.

They were able to encourage the mum to do breathing exercises and minutes after their arrival, the mother gave birth to baby Owen.

The three other officers, Zachary Vormittag, Jadin Rodriguez and Conor Deimer, had not had to deal with an emergency birth before, but for Sgt Negron, it was already the fifth time.

He was even made the godfather of one of the babies, who was born in 2017, when the baby, named Bryce, stopped breathing when the umbilical cord got wrapped around his neck.

The same year, he had delivered a baby girl on the side of the road in Centereach.

The Suffolk County Police Department released a photograph of the four officers along with a statement saying: “A Shirley woman has a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving week with the birth of her son, Owen, who arrived in dramatic fashion with the help of SCPD officers on Saturday.

“Police were called to the home of Rebecca Reyes, who was in labor and unable to make it to the hospital. Seventh Precinct Police Officer Conor Diemer rushed to the house and helped Reyes to lay down in the living room. He was joined by Officers Jadin Rodriguez, Zachary Vormittag and Sgt. Jon-Erik Negron.

“Rebecca gave birth to her third child, Owen, at 10:25 a.m. Shirley Community Ambulance personnel arrived shortly after to cut the umbilical cord and transported the healthy mother and baby to Stony Brook University Hospital.

“While this is the third time Rebecca has been part of a baby delivery, one person in the room has her beat. This is the fifth baby delivery Sgt. Negron has been involved in as a member of the SCPD, earning him the nickname the ‘Baby Whisperer.'”
