This is the newborn baby which was found dumped on the side of a road in a shopping bag with its umbilical cord still attached.

The incident took place in the Wangsa Maju area of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur when an unnamed witness said he saw a man and a woman dump the bag on the pavement before leaving on a motorbike.

The witness then checked the bag and found a baby wrapped in cloth inside, and so alerted the authorities.

Police officers and a medical team from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital went to the scene but could only confirm that the baby had died.

Local police chief Rajab Ahad Ismail said: “The baby was believed to had just been born based on the umbilical cord found on the body. The body has been sent to the forensics unit at Kuala Lumpur Hospital for further investigations.”

Ismail said the witness could not identify the couple who dumped the baby and an investigation in “intentionally concealing the birth of a child by burying or discreetly disposing of the body” has been launched.

The case is ongoing and no arrests have been reported.
