This is the moment a suspected thief is attacked on the ground by an angry mob after he was allegedly caught robbing and beating an elderly man selling bubblegum on the street for cash.

The incident was filmed in the neighbourhood of Villas Otoch Paraiso in the tourist hot spot of Cancun located in the south-eastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

In the footage, a young man is seen sitting on the ground as a mob member holds onto his hair and several others kick and hit the suspect.

While cowering on the ground and trying to protect his face, the unnamed suspect is heard saying: “I understand, I will not do it again. Take me to the police station.”

Eyewitnesses said the young man has previously beaten and robbed an elderly man who was selling bubble gum on the street to make a little money.

An angry mob then caught the suspect and beat him up before turning him over to the cops, according to reports.

The man is currently in police custody although it is unclear if he has been charged with anything yet.

The investigation is ongoing.
