An autopsy has revealed that a two-year-old girl died from choking on a piece of sausage at a German nursery school.

The girl’s parents, who remained unclear on what the cause of death was, were told about the autopsy results on 19th February.

It has now been revealed that the girl choked on a piece of sausage at a kindergarten in the German city Rostock.

Harald Nowack, a spokesperson from the public prosecutor’s office announced that the examination confirmed the child went through a so-called ‘bolus death’ where a foreign body got stuck in the child’s throat for a short time which pressured the laryngeal nerves.

This occurrence triggers a reflex that leads to an immediate cardiovascular failure and the person affected usually dies quite quickly.

The main cause of this type of death is considered to be insufficient chewing, which in the case of the little girl was a small piece of sausage.

According to the spokesperson, by the time of the autopsy there was no foreign body in her system, and they believe that the piece of sausage had either been removed by a teacher, emergency worker or somehow fell out later.

The Rostock public prosecutor’s office concluded that there was no involvement of a third party in the tragic event.

Nowack added: “All interrogations supported the suspicion that what happened was a terrible accident.”
