Chicago’s mayor Lori Lightfoot has slammed 1,000 revellers seen in this video who she said ignored advice to stay home to attend a party on the west side of the city.

The video circulating online which Chicago police said they were investigating shows more than 100 people huddled together in a closed room with some dancing to hip-hop music.

Local media reported that the rest of the house was equally full of the stairs and front room that can be seen in the video.

One person who attended the party who spoke to local media said that together with the people in the yard it was about a thousand who were packed in and she admitted it was hot and muggy.

All of those who attended, she said, were not worried about contracting the coronavirus including the identified 23-year-old who said: “I’m not worried about (the coronavirus) … but if I didn’t have it before, I probably have it now. Oh well.”

The mayor took to Twitter to criticise those who attended the house party in violation of Illinois’ stay-at-home order during the virus outbreak and urged people in Chicago to practice social distancing.

She said: “I have seen the video which shows what appears to be a house party taking place inside a Chicago residence. What was depicted in the video was reckless and utterly unacceptable.”

The video posted online by Facebook user Tink Purcell contains graphic language and has not edited. It had been shared more than 60,000 times and been viewed more than 1.3 million times in less than 24 hours.
