A suspected thief has told a court that he stole expensive branded goods from a shop to please his wife as he is impotent and she is considering leaving him.

According to local media, 40-year-old Egyptian national Amum B. was caught stealing Dior and Armani perfumes and designer clothes from a store in Dusseldorf, the capital of North Rhine Westphalia in Germany.

During his trial this week, he admitted to stealing the goods but told the court that his wife was angry with him because he is impotent so he wanted to give her some nice gifts.

At the unnamed luxury store, the suspect was reportedly caught stealing brand clothes in a changing room where he removed the security tags with pliers he brought with him before placing the items in his bag.

The middle-aged man was caught by store security guards, according to local media.

He said in court: “I am diabetic and have erection problems. My wife wants to leave me because of this. I needed these things in an attempt to keep my wife and make her happy.”

He added: “I love my wife and three kids.”

However, prosecutors believe the man intended to sell the goods on.

The judge also doubted the defendant’s explanation as he also stole men’s clothes from the store, according to reports.

Amum B. told the court: “I have no previous convictions. This is the last time I will ever do anything like this.”

The defendant was fined 1,500 EUR (1,280 GBP) which he has to pay back in monthly instalments of 30 EUR (26 GBP).
