KFC has launched an investigation after a customer posted a photo apparently showing two nests of fly eggs on one of the chain’s chicken wings.

The incident happened after a customer in the city of Nantong, in Jiangsu Province in eastern China claimed to have bought a bucket of fried chicken at a KFC restaurant.

A user named ‘Nantong Laolang’ on social media site Weibo, said a friend had ordered the bucket and had found the eggs on one of the wings.

In the photos, two small patches of what appear to be fly eggs can be seen on the chicken wing.

They wrote: “My friend ordered take away food from KFC this morning and found this thing. Has anyone encountered a similar situation?”

The customer, who has not been named, told reporters: “I live on the 29th floor. There are no flies here. KFC has contacted me many times, requesting me to delete these photos.”

The takeaway order shows the customer ordered a bucket of 10 fried wings, two spicy chicken wings, three New Orleans grilled wings and one bag of fries.

The KFC branch in Yuanrong told reporters they are investigating the incident, saying they cannot confirm what the white patches are without a professional inspection.

Local media report Yuanrong KFC claim it is impossible for fly eggs to survive in 170-degree-Celsius frying oil, so the eggs must have got onto the wing when the food was stored in the wrong place by the delivery man.

Fly eggs usually hatch within 24 hours and become maggots.

Nantong Market Supervision and the Administration Bureau are investigating the case.
