This is the moment a grandfather in a leg brace shuffles along the floor with the aid of a chair to catch his grandson falling headfirst from a table in the nick of time.

The dramatic save was filmed in the city of Weifang in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong and the footage has been widely shared on the social network Douyin, which is what TikTok is known as in China.

According to the news site Sina, the grandfather, name not reported, was caring for his two grandchildren while also nursing an injury that required a leg brace.

When the two-year-old boy climbed on the table below the TV, the man jumped to his feet and used a chair to slide over to the table and catch his falling grandson in the nick of time.

After viewing the CCTV footage afterwards, the children’s mother Ms Zhao said it was a relief the grandfather responded quickly, as the result could have been “unimaginable”.

In the footage, the grandfather is heard shouting to the boy as he climbs on the table and starts to touch the TV screen.

Anticipating a possible accident, the man reaches for a nearby chair and shuffles over to the table, mumbling all the way.

He arrives at the table just as the boy falls headfirst, catching him and apparently preventing him from whacking his head on the floor.
