The Mexican authorities have found 86 bags stuffed with human remains in a hidden grave after 20 days of digging.

Prosecutors said the remains were found at a property located on Pedro Moreno Street in the Santa Anita colony in San Pedro Tlaquepaque, in the western Mexican state of Jalisco.

Investigators worked for 20 days at the property after prosecutors specialised in missing people located it as the possible location of a missing woman whose disappearance had caused the activation of the Alba Protocol, a special protocol for the disappearance of women and children.

When investigators found evidence of human remains on the property, they were given a warrant to begin searching and digging.

A digger and a lorry were used to excavate the clandestine grave, where 86 bags of human remains were found along with other evidence which has not been specified by the authorities.

The human remains have been sent to the Jalisco Forensic Science Institute in order to be identified through DNA. It is unclear how many victims the remains belonged to.

The investigation is ongoing and so far no arrests have been made.

Violent crime is common in the state of Jalisco, the homeland of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most dangerous and powerful drug cartels.
