This is the moment Chilean protesters launch fireworks at a police station in an armed assault which saw eight cops injured.

The incident took place at the police station of the commune of Penalolen in the Santiago Metropolitan Region in central Chile and according to Colonel Julio Santelices, several protesters attacked the police station with guns, sound bombs and fireworks.

The attack reportedly saw one side of the station catch fire and footage shows protesters firing fireworks towards the building. A series of green lasers can be seen flashing but it is unclear who they belonged to.

Eight policemen were reported injured as a consequence of the attack and Santelices told local media that the police stations in Huechuraba and Padre Hurtado, both in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, were also attacked on the same day.

More than 50 cops were injured on Wednesday in the attacks on police stations that night with more than 100 police facilities attacked since Monday, according to local authorities.

Reports said during the civil uprising in Chile there have been 5,422 incidents in Chile with 15,382 people arrested. Reports state 87.7 percent of those arrested had criminal records.

Several parliament members of the opposition to President Sebastian Pinera filed a constitutional complaint this week against the politician accusing him of crimes against human rights for ordering the National Army to repress civilians using force.

President Pinera told local media: “What the country needs today is peace, is unity, is agreements and solutions to the problems of Chileans.”

The Chilean government agreed with the opposition this month to have a referendum to change the constitution approved during the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1981).
