A 20-year-old woman in the Gaza Strip has been beaten to death allegedly by her father after he flew into a rage when he found out she phoned her mum after her parents split.

Madeleine Al-Jarba, 20, died at the Shuhada’ Al-Aqsa hospital in Gaza, a self-governing Palestinian territory on the Mediterranean Sea, after she was admitted with bleeding wounds to her head and neck.

Local media report Jarba, from the city of Deir al Balah, had been beaten by her father after he caught her using a mobile phone to contact her mother, whom he is divorced from, during the Muslim Eid celebrations.

The father had reportedly banned the 20-year-old from owning a phone or contacting her mother and flew into a fit of rage when he saw her on the device.

Jarba reportedly died from her injuries a day later and her death has sparked outrage, with the local Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemning the killing and accusing the authorities of a “lack of seriousness” when dealing with domestic violence.

One netizen wrote: “Madeleine is a girl from my city Gaza, we are the same age. Her father killed her… Stop crimes against women!”

The police have launched an investigation are reportedly yet to find the girl’s father who is set for questioning.
