The victim, Nadera G., 33, had separated from her Afghan husband in September last year after suffering repeated violence.

As the woman was with her children on a regular meeting with their father, named as Badar M., 36, he attacked with a knife at a gym in the town of Crimmitschau in the district of Zwickau, in the German state of Saxony, on 11th February.

The first stab wound penetrated her heart, causing her to fall unconscious while another stab wound hit her head.

The suspect stabbed the victim 11 times in total, while their five children witnessed the scene.

Judge Torsten Sommer from Zwickau Regional Court sentenced Badar M. to life in prison on Thursday, 19th October.

Judge Sommer said at the hearing that the fact that he slaughtered the woman in front of her children was a particularly serious act, ruling out early release. He said that the fact he pleaded guilty was not a mitigating circumstance.

Court spokesman Joerg Reneberg, 58, said: “The court considered both the murder characteristic of insidiousness and the further murder characteristic of the existence of a base motive to be fulfilled.

“In addition, the particular gravity of the guilt was established. An early release on probation after 15 years is therefore not possible.”

Judge Sommer said: “The victim could not have expected this immediate attack.

“She didn’t even have the chance to defend herself.

“He considered Nadra his property with which he could do whatever he wanted.”

Prosecutor Barbara Gremm said that the suspect severely traumatized his children and criticised his behaviour during the trial.

According to local media, he faked an epileptic seizure and tried to prevent the hearing process with a hunger strike.

Gremm said: “The defendant only knows one word and that is ‘me’.”

The family had moved from Afghanistan to Germany several years ago.

Nadera G. was described by people who knew her as friendly, open and cheerful, who lovingly looked after the children.
