A one-year-old boy nearly went blind in one eye after he accidentally rammed a pencil into his head before pulling it out himself on the way to hospital.

The 14-month-old was referred from clinic to clinic before finally being admitted to Dongguan Children’s Hospital in China’s southern Guangdong Province on 17th January.

According to the facility, the boy arrived some seven hours after he accidentally tripped while holding a pencil in his hand, impaling his left eye socket during the fall.

However, due to the pain and discomfort of having a pencil lodged in his head, the boy reportedly pulled it out on the way to hospital while his parents were not paying attention.

Neurosurgeon Deng Wangbin found that the accident had fractured a piece of the boy’s left eye socket, which was now also lodged in his skull.

Fortunately, the pencil appeared to graze his eyeball and did not cause any serious damage to his vision.

An emergency craniotomy was scheduled for the toddler, who had a section of his forehead surgically removed in order for medics to retrieve the skull fragment inside his head.

The boy, who the hospital said “nearly went blind in one eye”, was also treated for swelling and possible infections in his eye socket.

The bone flap created during the craniotomy was replaced at the end of the operation, with the tot now recovering from the procedure, Doctor Wang said.

It is unclear when he is likely to be discharged.
