This is the moment a middle-aged woman is filmed smashing an ATM with a brick after she was reportedly unable to withdraw cash from the machine.

The clip filmed by a passer-by in the city of Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in South China, shows the middle-aged bank customer repeatedly hitting the machine’s monitor.

It happened at 5:50pm local time on 21st May after the branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China had already closed for the day.

The woman walked into the ATM booth on the ground floor of the Minghu Mansion tower block hoping to withdraw cash, but grew frustrated when the machine did not allow her to do so, reports said.

It is still unclear why she was denied the cash withdrawal, but the video shows her taking out her anger on the automated teller machine, breaking it with the brick.

The state-owned bank – the largest in the world in terms of assets, deposits, loans, customers and staff – has sealed off the ATM while police investigate.

Authorities said they had yet to apprehend the woman.

The customer faces up to three years in jail as well as fines if found guilty of vandalism.

If deemed serious, the offence could lead to between three to seven years behind bars for destruction of private or public property.
