Woman Gives Birth On Bus And Apologises To Applauding Passengers

A woman has given birth to a newborn baby on a bus in Rio de Janeiro and she apologised to passengers for the inconvenience while they applauded her.

Footage of the incident on line 867, in Campo Grande, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, was widely shared on social media and shows passengers applauding and filming the birth after the woman went into labour on the public bus.

One of the passengers, named as Jordy Monteiro, reportedly said: “I got on the bus at 6:20 p.m. and the woman was already standing inside, holding on to a bar and said that she did not want to sit down and that she was feeling a lot of pain.”

He added: “She said that her water had broken.”

The driver, who has not been named, took the woman to the Rocha Faria Hospital, in the same neighbourhood, with the woman asking him to go faster, but after they arrived and some passengers got out to ask for help, there was no more time.

Monteiro, who said that the driver had to go through a red light to get to the hospital, added: “A woman helped her give birth, she took off her trousers and the baby came out very quickly.”

The images then show a medical worker carrying the newborn baby off the bus in his arms. The mother can then be seen walking right behind him, apologising for having interrupted the other passengers’ trip while they clap and cheer her.

The bus resumed normal operations after the mother and her newborn baby were admitted to the hospital, where they are currently believed to be recovering.
