According to congresswoman Maria Beatriz Martinez, the riot took place after prisoners insisted that the prison authorities allow their relatives to bring in food.

The situation reportedly led to three violent confrontations between inmates and prison workers.

Prison service minister Iris Varela confirmed that a group of inmates attacked guards and that the warden suffered knife wounds during the riot.

The human rights group Observatorio Venezolano de Prisiones (OVP), who monitors the conditions in Venezuelan prisons, claimed that the prison is overcrowded with 2,500 inmates in a facility that should hold a maximum of 750.

Reports said that family members identified the 47 victims through images on a computer screen.

The seriously injured have been transferred to the Hospital Dr. Miguel Oraa while the dead bodies were taken to a makeshift morgue near the prison, according to local media.
