An 19-year-old engineering student has been shot dead while waiting for a bus when he was hit in the head by two stray bullets from a gunfight in Mexico.
The tragedy happened when teenager Arturo Humberto Martinez Cervantez was waiting at the bus stop to head to lectures at the Polytechnic University of Guanajuato (Mexico).
The teenager apparently did not even have time to run for cover when shooting started between two cars on the motorway in the city of Guanajuato in the Mexican state with the same name.
The dead man’s family said that his corneas had been donated for transplantation and had managed to allow two other people to see through his death.
He was hit in the head not just once but by two bullets, killing him instantly. His family said the young man was in the fourth semester of an Engineering in Manufacturing Technology degree.
Cops said that three other people who were apparently involved in the gunfight were killed in the shooting but that no arrests had yet been made. Shell casings were found at the scene, next to an abandoned Mazda car that was part of the shootout between the criminals, according to local media.
The tragic death prompted an appeal from students and professors at the University to do more to protect the safety of those studying there.
The Ministry of Innovation, Science and Higher Education of Guanajuato branded the shooting a tragedy and posted on Twitter its condolence to the entire educational community.
Among the officials who condemned the killing of the young man was the local deputy of Morena, Raul Marquez Albo, who said: “I want to show my outrage at the death of the UPG student, Arturo Humberto Martinez, who lost his life as a victim of violence in the state.”
According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, the sixth month of 2019 has been the most violent with 79 murders a day and 2,469 victims in total (22, per 100,000 inhabitants) since Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s government began.
