This is the moment Trompita the elephant rescued from a circus over a decade ago enjoys a 300-lb cake made with all her favourite treats as she celebrates her 59th birthday.

The special birthday event took place at La Aurora Zoo in the southern Guatemalan capital Guatemala City and the footage was shared on the animal park’s Facebook page where it has been viewed 33,000 times.

She was presented with a huge 135-kilogramme (298-lb) cake made with bananas, apples, melons, carrots, corn and other vegetables she loves.

The Asian elephant was rescued from an Italian circus in poor health and was relocated at a private animal park in southern Guatemala in 2008, according to local media.

The elephant, who was named Bombi at the private park, was transferred to La Aurora Zoo several years later and renamed Trompita.

Her intended mate Mocosita, who was also a star of the zoo, died in 2007 six months before Trompita’s arrival, according to reports.

Trompita is one of the zoo’s main attractions and dedicated zoo staff prepared a public birthday event for the 59-year-old elephant.

The zoo, which opened in 1924, has over 1,600 animals of 235 different species.
