This is the terrifying moment a cheap mobile phone explodes in a 70-year-old man’s shirt pocket while he was enjoying a cup of tea.
The footage, filmed in the city of Thrissur, in the southern Indian state of Kerala, shows the man sitting on a chair by a table enjoying a cup of tea before his phone battery suddenly explodes with a bang, setting his clothes on fire.
The man, named only as Eliyas, jumps to his feet, knocking his glass to the floor, and attempts to tackle the flames, which can be seen leaping up out of his white shirt and around his face, in the incident which took place on the morning of Thursday, 18th May.
The burning device, reportedly bought for just under GBP 10, can then be seen tumbling to the floor out of his burnt breast pocket as a younger man rushes over to help.
The OAP can then be seen making his way over to the door as the other man, who has not been named, makes sure he is okay after pouring some water on the device.
He reportedly suffered mild burns to his chest.
The make and model of the phone have not been revealed, but local media said that it was an entry-level device that Eliyas had bought for just INR 1,000 (GBP 9.75).
