A terrified German Shepherd that ran onto a train and refused to leave after being scared by New Year’s Eve fireworks has been reunited with its owner after an appeal on Facebook.
The female dog was spotted travelling without its owner, sitting in a seat on the train between Gliwice and Czestochowa in Poland on New Year’s Eve.
Passengers realised that the dog had no owner when the ticket collector came along, and one kindhearted passenger decided to take care of the dog when it became clear that the officials wanted the animal off the train.
The man took the scared animal home, and then his sister posted a message on Facebook appealing for help find the owners.
Agnieszka Zdeb wrote: “My brother was travelling on the train when he spotted the dog travelling alone. He gave him some water on the journey and when it became clear that the train officials were unhappy about the fare dodger, the dog seem to realise and then followed my brother off the train.
“My brother gave it food and a place to stay and took her for a walk, and I am hoping now that the owner finds their dog which appears to have been scared by the fireworks and run away. I assume they are looking for each other.”
But this story has a good end after it was revealed the owners got in touch after seeing the appeal, and identified the dog as their pet called Mercedes, who is from Silesia.
Polish officials said that the fireworks often leave local animal shelters dealing with runaway dogs scared by the noise.
Agnieszka also posted a note confirming the dog had been reunited with his family and added: “Thank you to everyone who helped in the search for the owner.
“And Good luck to those who are still looking for missing four-legged friends.”
