Yara Gattavecchi, 16, lost her battle in the hospital, only two days after the incident which took place in Abbadia San Salvatore commune in Siena, in the Italian province of Tuscany, on Thursday night (22nd July).

Despite not having a driving licence because she was underage, Yara’s friend, whose name was not disclosed, wanted to show off her driving skills and decided to get into the vehicle parked in the backyard.

The incident happened when Yara’s friend made a mistake in shifting the gear. Instead of putting it in reverse, the girl shifted into first gear and shot forward where she hit Yara.

The car was not moving at a fast speed but it was enough to crush the young girl against the wall.

Yara was taken to Le Scotte hospital in Siena in a critical condition. She underwent several examinations and surgery but she died in the hospital on Saturday (24th July).

Hundreds of messages of condolence have been pouring in to Yara’s family, who were well known in the area for producing wine and for having owned a local restaurant for decades.

Yara’s high school, the Liceo Poliziano, also wrote a message for the tragic loss of one of their students, saying: “Our student Yara Gattavecchi, of 3D Liceo Linguistico, passed away. The community of the Liceo Poliziano mourns the untimely death of Yara, hugs her mother, father, the whole family and shares in their pain and the excruciating pain of all those who with Yara have shared days and years of life, of passion, of joy, of hope.”
