Traffic cameras have captured the moment a car is completely flattened by a heavy goods vehicle and then buried by its cargo of sand.

The accident happened on 18th December in the port of Rongcheng, which is in Weihai City in East China’s Shandong Province.

CCTV footage shows the SUV and the semi-trailer lorry hauling sand coming together at a crossroads, with the heavy goods vehicle having veered to the right in a bid to avoid crashing into the car.

However, the lorry trailer becomes unbalanced and tips onto its left side, falling right on top of the smaller SUV which is crushed and flattened under its weight.

The video shows the SUV disappearing underneath the heavy vehicle, and several tonnes of sand pour out onto the street, burying the wreckage.

Authorities who were eventually able to lift the trailer off the SUV said a male and a female were found without vital signs inside the flattened car.

They were declared dead at the scene, having not had any time to escape the overturning lorry.

Reports say one or both of the vehicles may have run a red light prior to the accident, but further investigations are ongoing into the crash.
