This is the moment Spanish medics applaud a woman for being the first COVID-19 patient to leave the hospital’s ICU following a successful course of treatment.

The unnamed patient was hospitalised in the intensive care unit of the General Hospital in the city of Castellon in the eastern Spanish region of Valencia with a serious case of COVID-19.

The woman left the ICU on a stretcher to return to a normal ward while being clapped and cheered by proud hospital workers.

Staff members were overjoyed by the incident as the woman was the first COVID-19 patient to leave the hospital’s ICU since the pandemic began.

In the footage, workers are seen wearing face masks and rubber gloves as the patient is wheeled out of the intensive care unit on a stretcher.

The video was accompanied with the message: “Gestures like this keep us hopeful that we can stop this virus together.”

Meanwhile, the patient thanked hospital staff for their dedicated service which reportedly helped to bring her life out of danger.

As of 23rd March, Spain has recorded 28,572 cases of COVID-19 with 1,720 deaths and 2,575 recoveries.

The region of Valencia has reported 1,604 cases of the virus.
