These shocking images published in Japanese media reportedly show two medics kissing and others passed out drunk at a party for trainee doctors from one of Japan’s most prestigious hospitals that resulted in 18 of them testing positive for COVID-19.

The Keio University Hospital in the central Japanese capital Tokyo has apologised for the “unforgivable blunder” after a trainee doctor tested positive for the virus last week leading to tests on another 98 medics with 17 others diagnosed with COVID-19, according to reports.

The hospital confirmed that 40 trainee doctors had attended the after-work party in a bar with these images published in Japanese media showing what went on at the party now being widely shared and causing outrage.

Hospital director Yuko Kitagawa said: “What happened was an unforgivable blunder on part of our trainee doctors.

“They sorely lacked the self-awareness needed for being a doctor.”

The 18 resident trainees are currently hospitalised while the remaining residents are undergoing self-isolation at home.

According to local media, life in the Japanese capital has continued like normal despite Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike calling on people to stay at home during the weekends and to refrain from attending gatherings.

Reports said that people are still dining out and meeting in parks with their children while workers continue to travel by public transport, although trains are less crowded than normal.

The hospital said the party took place on 26th March, one day after the governor’s call to stay at home.

On Tuesday, Japan declared a state of emergency in Tokyo and six other prefectures.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Japan has registered 4,667 cases of COVID-19, 94 related deaths and 632 recoveries.
