The images show a burst-open iPhone smoking on the floor after it reportedly exploded in a schoolgirl’s hands.

The startling incident took place in the city of Zaporizhia in south-eastern Ukraine’s Zaporizhia Oblast region when the schoolgirl, who has not been named in reports, was about to leave for school.

The girl’s father, who has not been identified in local media, said: “My daughter was getting ready for school, she was about to get her shoes on and was holding her phone in her hand. All of a sudden the device stated to sputter and glister.”

The quick-thinking girl then reportedly threw the device onto the floor and her dad says it caught fire as soon as it hit the floor.

A video taken after the girl threw the iPhone shows it smoking and the sides appear to have burst open. The device appears to have been burnt black in areas and the girl’s father claims that the phone had been used with normal settings and had not been exposed to extreme temperatures.

He added: “Thank God it did not happen in her handbag. Even if the phone had been on the sofa, it could have led to a fire. My advice to you all is not to leave your phone unattended.”

Local media report the girl was not injured in the incident.

Netizen ‘Carv Sergey’ said: “Either this battery wasn’t original, or it has been overused. Batteries do not explode just like that.”

Another one ‘Andjey Muzyka’ added: “I bet it is a Chinese copy or it is a fake. It would have never happened with an original phone.”

It is unclear if Apple have commented on the incident. The exact model of iPhone is currently unclear.
