SLIDING DOORS: Shock Moment Train Drags Octogenarian To His Death

This is the moment when an OAP runs to catch the metro but gets his hand stuck in the closing door and is dragged along the platform to his death.

A security camera caught the tragedy as it unfolded at Uruguaiana Station on the Rio de Janeiro Metro in Brazil on 22nd October last year (2022).

The footage was only recently made public and proves – alleges the victim’s family – that there was a failure in the train security system.

Victim Jose Alves Simao died aged 82 from injuries he sustained when he fell into the gap between the train and the platform edge.

Local media reported at the time that he suffered chest and abdominal trauma, as well as internal bleeding.

MetroRio has since admitted that “the security mechanism did not identify part of Mr Jose Simao’s body as an obstacle”.

It said in a statement: “MetroRio has been collaborating with the Civil Police’s investigations and has provided all information and images necessary for proper investigation of the accident.

“Soon after the accident, the concessionaire made itself available to the family to offer the necessary support.”

Jose had been heading to a mobile phone repair shop before going to see his football team, Vasco da Gama, take on arch-rivals Flamengo with one of his sons.

The son had spent hours trying to call his father but his calls went unanswered. He was eventually delivered the bad news by police.

Jose left behind a wife and five children.
