A popular singer has revealed her young son’s scarred face after he was attacked by a cougar in California.

Raquel del Rosario, 39, lives with her husband, Pedro Castro, and two sons in the western US state. She is the former wife of F1 racing driver Fernando Alonso.

She is known in her own right for having been the lead singer in the now-defunct band El Sueno de Morfeo (Morpheus’ Dream), which performed pop-rock influenced by north-western Iberian folk music.

Her five-year-old son, Mael, was attacked by a cougar in their garden in August. It was the singer herself who managed to drive the big cat away with her fists.

Del Rosario took to social media last weekend to post a photo of her son’s scarred face four months after the attack, as can be seen here.

The youngster can be seen adorably hugging a cat, with scars visible on his neck, chin and left cheek.

The vocalist, who hails from the island of Gran Canaria in Spain’s Canary Islands archipelago, had previously posted a photo to her now 230,000 Instagram followers showing the extensive scarring on her son’s back.

In the text alongside the snap, she revealed that the doctor had told her: “A few more millimetres and he would not have made it.”

The attack took place when the youngster went to pick fruit from a tree. His mum heard a scream and looked towards her son to find that a cougar had pounced on top of him.

The big cat was wounding the youngster with its claws, but the heroic mum managed to run over and repel the fierce animal with just her fists.

California has an estimated cougar population of 1,500 to 5,000, according to a 2020 report. They rarely encroach upon people’s homes, though it can happen, as Del Rosario has shown.
