This is the shocking moment witnesses scream as an armed policeman guns down a suspect who charges at him with a meat cleaver in a popular shopping street.

Authorities in the city of Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan Province in south-western China, said the knifeman named only by his surname Zhong, 37, was not in any life-threatening condition.

The incident took place at the pedestrianised shopping district street known as Chunxi Road and was captured by dozens of witnesses yesterday (6th April).

In the footage, terrified witnesses hide in shops and film through windows as Zhong walks around the shopping area carrying a rucksack and holding a large meat cleaver.

Security guards and local policemen follow Zhong as crowds of shoppers disperse when he walks and then runs towards them.

SWAT officers with riot shields can be seen descending on Zhong, edging closer to the suspect who suddenly runs at one of the officers.

The person filming appears to scream as the cop fires off a shot at the suspect’s midriff and he collapses on the ground in a pool of blood.

The authorities converge on Zhong as the video ends.

Chengdu police said Zhong was first spotted by patrolling officers when he damaged objects such as dustbins using his blade.

He was taken to hospital and treated for a gunshot wound, but he was not in any life-threatening condition, the police said.

The incident was still being investigated at the time of writing.
