A scooter rider who was sent flying when he tried to cross a railway track and was hit by a fast-moving freight train in this video has died of his injuries.

The male victim, 26, and his scooter were flung several dozen feet by the ND5 diesel-electric locomotive during the accident on 27th September.

Video from the county of Dangtu, which is in Ma’anshan City in East China’s Anhui Province, shows the as yet unnamed victim entering the level crossing and failing to slow down as the train approaches.

He appears to spot it at the last second and tries to brake, but he is hit by the front of the train a second later and thrown out of frame by the impact.

The scooter rider was found unconscious at the scene and later succumbed to his injuries, with attempts to revive him in hospital ultimately unsuccessful.

Reports have speculated that the rider’s peripheral vision was impeded by his motorcycle helmet, which did not allow him to see the approaching freight train out the corner of his eye.

The narrow crossing on the railway section – part of the Nanjing-Wuhu Railway line – once had boom barriers as well as a duty staff member guarding it.

However, both safety measures were scrapped this May in favour of an automated broadcast triggered which is triggered when the tracks are in use by a passing train, reports said.

The authorities are still investigating the incident and have not say whether current safety standards would be reviewed.
