A bull runner has died after he was cornered and gored by a giant bull during a Spanish festival.
Shocking video footage of the attack shows Daniel Gonzalez Arribas, 30, dashing across the bull’s path before he falls to the ground.
As he slips, the bull lowers its horns and gores the runner in front of horrified onlookers, whose cheers and laughter turn quickly to screams.
The festival footage – from Navalcarnero, near the Spanish capital Madrid – was filmed in the early hours of the morning earlier this month (September), according to local media reports.
Gonzalez Arribas was from the nearby municipality of Majadahonda and was well known for his enthusiastic participation in local bull-running events.
He was carried out of the bullring by fellow participants and taken to an ambulance before he died in hospital.
An eyewitness identified only as Agustin told local media that the screams that filled the arena were overwhelming.
He added: “He had no escape.
“They tried to help him, but the bull would not let him go.”
The celebrated former bullfighter Miguel Abellan expressed his “deepest condolences” to the unfortunate runner’s friends and family.
The Bullfighting Association of Navalcarnero sent them “encouragement and strength” for what it described as “hard and difficult times”.
Agustin added: “The bull had already done a few laps, it was tired.
“It even had blood coming out of his mouth…
“The young man cut it off well, but when he climbed the fence, he slipped and fell to the ground. The bull used what little strength it had left to brutally attack him.”
