People Plunge Into Water As Scaffolding Collapses At Fun Park Two Months After Fire Evacuations

An accident at Germany’s largest amusement park has left seven people injured less than two months after a massive fire forced the evacuation of 25,000 visitors.

At least five acrobats and two guests were injured after a high platform suddenly collapsed during a pirate show at Europa Park in Rust, Baden-Wurttemberg State, Germany, on Monday, 11th August.

Reports claimed that the acrobats were in the middle of the high-diving ‘Retorno dos Piratas’ performance when the mobile pool cracked and tore apart the diving platforms attached to it at around 5pm.

Video footage recorded by visitor Reshma Fadarkhan shows the dramatic moment of the collapse as the performers fall into the water from a height of 25 feet as the structures narrowly miss them as it also comes crashing down.

In addition, petrified tourists at the theme park can be seen quickly moving away from the scene and screaming in terror.

Cops said they are looking into the details of the incident, however, initial investigations revealed a scaffold – a temporary construction made for people to jump into the pool – prompted the collapse.

This – according to police – happened after the pool ruptured and its water flowed inside the lake of the ‘Atlantica SuperSplash’ water ride attraction, leaving the scaffold with nothing to hold on to.

Offenburg Police Headquarters said in a statement obtained by CEN: “During a show in an amusement park in the late afternoon, a total of seven people were injured in an accident, most of them slightly.

“Witnesses observed an incident occurring in a pool of water during a performance around 5 pm. A total of five artists and two visitors were injured.

“According to current knowledge, three of them came to the hospital for clarification.

“The background of how the accident happened is the subject of the police investigation.”

It is still unclear where exactly the injured were at the time of the incident, claimed media.

The newest incident reportedly followed less than two months after a rollercoaster at the park – considered Germany’s biggest and one of Europe’s most popular – went up in flames on Monday, 19th June.

The fire reportedly broke out in the control room of the ‘Yomi Magic World of Diamonds’ attraction’, thus leaving thrill-seekers petrified when they saw huge plumes of smoke billowing from it at around 4.40pm.

Around 25,000 visitors had witnessed the blaze before a total of 450 firefighters arrived and evacuated them to safety.

A similar fire – also caused by a technical defect in the ‘Pirates of Batavia’ attraction – last broke out at the facility in 2018.

The theme park – operating since 1975 – covers a total area of 95 hectares (235 acres) and is ranked 19th out of the 25 most visited theme parks in the world.

It received 5,4 million visitors in 2022.
