This is the touching moment an elderly coronavirus patient dance with a doctor in full protective gear after standing up for the time after 30 days in an intensive care unit.

The emotional scenes were recorded at the Vall d’Hebron hospital in the city of Barcelona, in the eastern Spanish region of Catalonia when patient Felipe, 70, was encouraged to dance by his physiotherapist Denis Santamaria as part of his physical recovery.

Felipe had reportedly spent one month in intensive care but is now in the phase of muscle adaption as he recovers from the virus.

In the video, he can be seen dancing with a doctor in full protective gear to the song Bailar Pegados by Sergio Dalma which was Spain’s entry to the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest.

The hospital thanked the physiotherapists for their work with coronavirus patients who can suffer from muscular problems after spending a lot of time in bed.

The Head of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at the hospital, Judith Sanchez Raya, told Newsflash that the 43 rehabilitation doctors at the hospital are currently treating coronavirus patients like this as they need to regain the strength in their muscles after time intubated or in bed.

She told Newsflash: “On Saturday, physiotherapist Denis Santamaria was working in the hospital and had to attend Felipe, who is more than 70 years old, and had been hospitalised in the intensive care unit of the hospital for 30 days.

“Dancing is one of the activities used by the physiotherapists as it is a way of working on the coordination, balance and mobility of the patients, as well as reinforcing the legs. It also works on an emotional level, as they are happy that they can dance again.”

She added: “It was touching because you can see how Felipe can keep his balance and even wave which means he is strong enough to stand with his legs without the help of the physiotherapist.

“He had not stood up in 30 days and the nurses there decided to put the music on so he could dance.”

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Spain has registered 226,629 cases with COVID-19 and 23,190 deaths.
