This is the moment members of one of Mexico’s most deadly cartels give out boxes of food featuring their leader’s face to the needy during the COVID-19 crisis.

According to local media, members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) gave food packages and bags with groceries to residents of the city of Guanajuato in the state of the same name in central Mexico.

The footage shows reported members of the CJNG with their faces covered standing on the back of a pickup truck loaded with boxes. Music is playing and locals are seen clapping as they wait to receive the boxes.

The alleged gangsters then begin handing out the aid boxes which feature the CJNG badge and the face of its leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, aka “El Mencho”.

The second clip shows several people lining up at night to receive bags filled with groceries which are marked with the CJNG stamps to help during the COVID-19 crisis.

Reports said that the city centre of Guanajuato is under the control of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel led by Jose Antoni Yepez, alias “El Marro”, a rival of “El Mencho”.

The Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said: “I want to say to you that those organised criminal gangs who give out groceries, that does not help. Stopping their criminal activities helps.”

According to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University, there have been 14,677 cases of COVID-19 in Mexico and 1,351 deaths.
