The only woman in the Russian cosmonaut team has had a special edition Barbie doll produced in her likeness to honour the 60th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first person to travel to space.

The new doll is based on Anna Kikina, 36, the only woman in the Roscosmos cosmonaut corps.

Mattel in Russia clarified that the doll will not go on sale, but it can be won in a competition to honour of the 60th anniversary of the first manned flight into space.

The Barbie cosmonaut doll is produced exclusively in the image of Kikina in two versions of costumes, a training suit and an Orlan-type spacesuit.

The doll can be won in a competition to honour of the 60th anniversary of the first crewed flight into space.

According to the news site Life, Kikina noted that such a doll could help little girls realise their dream of becoming a space traveller.

She said: “As a child, I never dreamed of becoming a cosmonaut, but if I had a Barbie cosmonaut doll then the idea of becoming one would have probably come to me much earlier.”

Kikina has been the only woman in the cosmonaut corps of Roscosmos since 2016. She is expected to visit the International Space Station (ISS) in 2022 and perform a spacewalk.

Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to journey into outer space in his capsule Vostok 1 on 12th April 1961.
