A Californian couple and their three-year-old son who were staying in an Airbnb flat while visiting relatives in Mexico have all been found dead in the same room with no sign of physical injuries.
Jose Nunez Junior, his wife Maria Nunez and their son Jayden Nunez were found dead in a rented apartment in Tijuana in Mexico on 25th September.
Trini Jacobo, the father’s aunt, said the young couple were staying with other family members at the Airbnb while visiting relatives in the city.
Jacobo told the news site KBAK: “They’re still in Mexico and they’re going to be performing an autopsy and definitely getting to the root of what caused their deaths. So we’re not sure about any specifics at this time.”
She added that no other family members were hurt and at the moment no one understands how or why the three-year-old boy and his parents died.
Jacobo said they were an amazing family, describing Jose as one of the best fathers she has ever met. The couple left behind four children.
Family members have launched a GoFundMe page to cover the cost of having the three bodies transported back to the US. It has so far raised USD 23,189 (GBP 17,002) of its USD 30,000 (GBP 22,000) target.
She said: “We’re not worried about anything else right now. We want our loved ones back in the States. We want to know what happened to them, of course, but… right now, we’re focused on getting Jose, Maria and Jayden home.”
Airbnb described the incident as “a horrific tragedy” and the listing has been removed from their site.
No more information has been released by the Mexican authorities as the investigation continues.
