Winner Salvador Gomez scooped the prize after his daughter pestered him to try his luck after hearing friends talk about the USD 1.2 billion (GBP 990 million) jackpot.

She said: “I convinced him to play. He handed me some money, and I bought the tickets.”

Until then, Salvador – from Chesterfield County, Virginia State, USA – had not planned to take part in Virginia Lottery’s Powerball draw on 2nd November.

But they were in for a big surprise after they remembered to check the tickets two weeks later and realised they had won USD 100,000 (GBP 82,434).

The ticket matched winning numbers 2, 11, 22, 35 and 60, in addition to Powerball number 23.

Virginia Lottery said: “Normally, that would win USD 50,000 [GBP 41,304], but his daughter spent an extra dollar for Power Play when she bought his ticket.

“That extra buck doubled his prize to USD 100,000 [GBP 82,434].”

The duo went to collect their prize at the Lottery’s headquarters on 600 East Main Street, in the city of Richmond on Monday, 23rd January 2023.

Gomez revealed that he plans to use the money to take care of his family and travel.

Virginia Lottery stated: “Powerball drawings are held at 10:59pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

“The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

“The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.

“All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia.

“Mr Gomez lives in Chesterfield County, which received nearly USD 35 million [GBP 29 million] in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year.

“In Fiscal Year 2022, the Lottery raised more than USD 779 million [GBP 643 million] for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.”
