This is the moment an angry Peruvian mum whips her teen son called Elvis in front of a crowd of villagers because he stole a mobile phone from a shop.

The bizarre form of community justice took place near the town of Huamachuco in the north-eastern Peruvian province of Sanchez Carrion, and the video was later shared on Facebook where it has been viewed 145,000 times.

The footage shows an angry mother scolding her 18-year-old son in front of a committee of citizens patrol brigades known as ‘Rondas Campesinas’.

She says: “Elvis, why did you have to steal a mobile phone that was not yours? I am standing here in front of the ‘Rondas’ over a phone, I feel embarrassed.”

She adds: “If you do that again, you will face the consequences on your own. You won’t see your mother here again.”

The disappointed mum then whips her son with a stick in front of community heads and other villagers.

The punishment ends with the teenager crying and hugging his mother in an apologetic gesture.

The boy is heard saying: “I am deeply sorry. I apologised to the man affected by the robbery and to all of you. If you have to punish me, I accept it.”

Reports said that Elvis stole a mobile phone from a local shop with some friends.

The boy returned the phone to the shop owner except for the battery as one of his friends took it.

It is unknown if the friends have also been punished.
