This mum has been arrested for strangling her baby to death while its father was at work after the tot was diagnosed with a virus before slashing her wrists in a bid to take her own life.

According to local media, the mother from the eastern Romanian city of Galati strangled her eight-month-old baby while her husband was at work.

The parents discovered that their baby had contracted an unspecified virus in hospital and the tot’s condition gradually worsened, according to reports.

Mum Mihaela fell into a depression as her baby continually contracted colds, lung afflictions and other illnesses, according to local media.

Fearing for her child’s future, the 35-year-old mum decided to end her baby’s life before attempting to take her own.

The baby’s 40-year-old father returned home only to find his wife lying in a pool of blood after cutting her wrists while the unconscious baby was next to her.

Doctor Catalin Timpau told local media: “We found an eight-month-old baby in cardiorespiratory arrest. After performing CPR we managed to get a pulse and immediately transferred the child to hospital.

“The mother was also hospitalised for her injuries and has since been admitted to a psychiatric facility.

“She was in shock and could not speak.”

Despite the doctors’ best efforts, the baby died in hospital.

Headed by the public prosecutor’s office, the police investigation is ongoing.

The authorities have yet to decide whether the mother is fit to stand trial.
