Former Spain boss Robert Moreno has said “I would love to regain my friendship” with La Roja’s current manager Luis Enrique saying “I am not going to throw nine years in the bin”.

Former Spain assistant manager Moreno, 42, made the comments to radio programme ‘El Partidazo’ broadcast by Spanish radio network COPE where he spoke about the controversial end to his nine-year friendship with former Barcelona boss Enrique, 49.

The former Real Madrid forward accused Moreno of being disloyal shortly after Enrique’s nine-year-old daughter died from cancer. Moreno took over the team in Enrique’s absence and Enrique claims Moreno said he wanted to take the team to Euro 2020.

When speaking about his former colleague, Moreno said: “I hold no grudges. I am eternally grateful to him. I am not going to throw nine years in the bin for one or two bad days.”

Despite seemingly ready to bury the hatchet, he admitted “If I am being honest, I do not know to this day” the incident that led Enrique to call him disloyal saying that “he has his opinion and that is it, but I do not think I did anything that he did not expect from me.”

When asked about his time with the Spanish national team as the assistant manager, working under Enrique’s direction from 2018 to 2019, he said: “I am very proud of my work and everything I did there.

“On my part, I’m open to absolutely anything, at a personal level I would love to regain the friendship after some time has passed.

“There are many more good things than bad in the past nine years.”

Enrique’s daughter Xana, 9, died in August of last year. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma which is a type of cancer that produces immature bones.

Enrique temporarily stepped down as Spain boss after her passing putting Moreno as the national team’s boss, however, not long after, Enrique would retake the position and sack Moreno reportedly saying he was disloyal.

Moreno first started working with Enrique in 2011 at Italian side Roma. He followed Enrique to Barcelona between 2014 and 2017 before being picked to manage the Spanish national team.
