This is the adorable moment a cute giraffe calf gingerly clambers to its feet for the first time as its mother look on.

The Rothschild’s giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) was born last week at Barcelona Zoo in the north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia.

According to the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Rothschild’s giraffe is categorised as endangered.

Due to its endangered status, giraffes maintain a large population in animal parks and nature reserves.

Barcelona Zoo is currently involved in a giraffe conservation programme and plans to launch a project with the authorities in Niger to help preserve their numbers there.

The calf’s 10-year-old mother Nuru arrived at the Catalan zoo from the Netherlands in 2011 and both are reportedly doing well following the birth.

Mum and baby will remain in a separate enclosure for several more days before rejoining the others, according to a zoo statement.

A giraffe’s pregnancy lasts between 450 and 468 days and the newborn typically measures around two metres (6.6 feet) in height.

The zoo said that female giraffe’s can give birth standing or while walking.

For the first weeks after birth, calves kneel next to their mum to avoid natural predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas.
