This is the moment two border cops creep down a grassy knoll in scary animal costumes and frighten off a troop of monkeys.

The incident took place in the sleepy hamlet of Talli Mirthi located in Uttarakhand, a state in northern India crossed by the Himalayas and known for its Hindu pilgrimage sites.

According to local media, two Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) officers dressed up in an animal costume to chase a troop of monkeys away from their camp.

In the footage, the two officials are seen creeping down a grassy knoll outside their camp in costume as dozens of monkeys run down to the road and disappear into the forest.

Reports said the border cops were dressed as bears, although the costumes appear to have tails suggesting they were posing as human-sized monkeys.

According to local media, urban development in northern India in recent years has displaced many animals, forcing them to flee their former habitats.

The growth of urbanisation has led to monkeys approaching several towns and cities in the region.

Last month, an official was seen chasing away a troop of monkeys from the grounds of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Gujarat while dressed in costume.
